Reflection 4: Like Them, but Different—On Californian vs. American Identity

In a recent interview, Governor Gavin Newson, speaking on the failure of the Trump administration during the Covid-19 pandemic, declared California a "nation-state." It's a curious choice of words which he's used before. In this context, California (which would be the fifth largest economy in the world, if it were a sovereign nation) is still part of the United States, but, in many ways, operates independently of Washington DC. Newsom's words were a not-so indirect attack on President Trump, but they also highlight what many Californians feel: Yes, we are Americans, we are also something different, something unique. Is there a difference between us and the rest of the country? Are Californian values the same as American values? For example, are our generally-liberal way of life the same as that of Texas or Iowa? Finally, which do you identify more as: an American or a Californian? Why?
